The story behind this is about several small things of myself and my friends. Ali (Pakistani) said he was afraid to be seen as a “terrorist”, Andrew (Nigerian) was cast stragne look by Finnish people on the bus everytime when commuting. When Andrew and Chia first saw me, they thought I was a boy (I’m not offended but amused). And in post-covid time, Chinese are still seen as virus. Someone shouted bad words to Chia once, but she’s not EVEN Chinese lol. And since I had studied in BUAA, which is defined as a top military-related university in China, although what I learned was translation between English and Chinese, cases like me would not be accepted by western universities anymore gradually. But is it legit to place me in the default position of a spy?
The era I was growing up in believes the concept of “Earth as a village”, but not anymore. Economic downturn needs a scapegoat, so that everyone can have some not-our-people to blame. But, seriously, “that me, Tom, and Jerry, won the second world war? We defeated Germany?” (standup comedian joke I can’t remember the exact names and the comedian, sry but you get the idea). No one can escape the snowflakes from a snowstorm, best one can do is to not accuse another human being who looks different from their very limited knowledge of human faces, or wish they don’t exist at all.

Microwave sensor has an advantage over PIR sensor in that it can be placed within a non-mental container and signal will not be blocked with a higher sensitivity, and it will be not affected by sunlight.
There are actually 2 more things about this. One is when I was testing the tone, I got the frequency wrong, and the ‘crooked’ Nokia ringtone sounded like ‘Maamme’, the Finnish anthem. Did anyone also notice that?
The other is I was thinking about the question I was asked out of blue few months ago about the ‘social credit system of China’. Now I give my proper answer: sweet, you guys are so nice but naive to make up this shit for us. Just imagine how much effect will be needed to compute the concurrency of the algorithm of 1.4 billion objects.. In China, we don’t need the ‘procedural justice’ to make someone ‘disappear’. When separate inccidents happen, we just do it, like Nike says. I mean, ofc it is feasible techically, but it’s just that we normal people don’t worth the money or the effort.

In this case, PIR (passive infrared) sensor is used instead of ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04) in previous cases to test and compare which is more suitable.

It’s about reaching to the unreachable, trespassing beyond boundary, lost and reconnection.
When you walk through the gate from outside, the green light will be triggered. When you leave the entrance from inside, the red light is on.

The Sponge Face
Starting point is I got several let’s just say ‘unfriendly reactions’ on the street for the past year since I came to Finland, so I was thinking maybe to make an interactive object to represent the uncertainty of the reaction that would be given to you when you encounter a stranger on the street.
There are 2 main reactions when I told others about these inccidents: deny or feel sorry. I do not need others to feel pity on me due to politeness. Everyone is an island, no one can really relate what others feel exactly.
To illustrate it better, I put together an interactive prototype. Logic is when someone is within 100cm to the device, 80% chance you’ll get a calm face with constant light on and horizontal eyebrows, while 20% chance an angry face with flashing light and raised eyebrows.
